Earwax Removal — What You Need to Know

Why we no longer offer earwax removal on the NHS

Due to changes in NHS funding and updated clinical guidance, GP practices in Wandsworth no longer provide earwax removal services. Find out more here. Traditional methods like ear syringing carry risks, and newer , safer techniques require special equipment and training.

If you’re experiencing symptoms like hearing loss or ear pain, we can refer you to specialists (ENT or audiology). Otherwise, you’ll need to seek removal elsewhere.

What can you do?

1. Soften earwax at home

Use olive oil or sodium bicarbonate drops to help soften the wax. Find out more here.

  • Ask your local pharmacy for advice on suitable drops.

2. Visit a local pharmacy for removal

Many pharmacies offer private earwax removal using safe techniques such as microsuction or gentle irrigation.

  • Examples in Wandsworth:
    • Specsavers Putney
    • Putney Pharmacy (Lower Richmond Road)
  • Prices typically range from £40 to £80 per session.
  • No GP referral needed — contact the pharmacy directly to book.

Why this change?

NHS funding no longer covers earwax removal at GP practices. This helps focus resources on essential medical care and ensures patients receive safer, specialist treatment when needed. https://www.thepharmacist.co.uk/news/successful-pharmacy-ear-health-pilot-will-not-be-recommissioned/
