Bridge Lane:
Long time chair Zenobia Cowan-Davies has stood down, as has secretary Jamie Gillespie, to make way for younger talent. Committee still meets two monthly with practice manager and one of the GP partners.
Lavender Hill:
Has been a rather fallow period so met with practice manager in December. She invited patients by email to a meeting and 30 turned up. At this meeting a group of volunteers was identified to do some thinking on the practice website. There was also a well attended meeting on the subject of the menopause
Chatfield:
Emma Snedden described how the new triage system had improved appointments booking. Unfortunately there had been no patient group since covid lockdown.
Falcon Road:
There has been a drop in committee numbers which needs to be addressed in the coming year.
Thurleigh Road:
The patient group believes the practice is improving, it is now fully staffed and triage is effective. All patients were recently invited to a meeting by email and 300 turned up! The practice has been nominated for an award at the annual London-wide Local Medical Committee Conference.
Balham Park:
This PPG has been in existence now for 16 years. Triage is working well. A newsletter is sent out regularly by email. Group members are participating in the training of care co-ordinators.
Begg:
Dr Begg invited patients to a meeting and 30 attended. Hassan Miah, practice manager, and his colleague reported that they are looking for a patient rep to attend the forum.
Tooting South:
Pauline Cowan reported that the practice has a patient group but it has not met for a year.
Greyswood:
The practice patient group has not met for quite a long time because there have been a lot of building works going on and the practice manager hasn't had time. A new ops manager has just been appointed and she has scheduled 4 meetings this year.
Earlsfield:
Ian Sweeney reported that the PPG was faltering and he felt unsupported, with no one to report to. He has been searching online to find out how other practices operate.
Putneymead:
Recent points of discussion have been * validity of Accurix * choice of hospital referral * links/ communication between primary & secondary care - each hospital seems to have its own system. Also concern about “Docman” system - this controls discharge from hospital but does not always work with some practices. Committee met on 20 January and agenda included * communications from practice * communications from secondary care * NHS news/announcements * Queen Mary Hospital diagnostics.
Clapham Junction:
Practice website and telephone message update for online triage and pharmacy first services. We are fully staffed and are still looking for more patient group members.
Junction Practice Plus:
Alan recently encountered a problem with phone calls to secondary care. He discovered that patients could be removed from waiting lists if they failed to answer phone calls. He raised this issue through PALS.
Bolingbroke:
The PPG is very happy with the practice - booking is working well, usually with GP of choice - many thanks to staff.
Southfields:
Rapid turnover of receptionists is affecting the practice. The two reps still report worries about triage/booking * filling in request forms * restrictions on when forms can be sent in. They also have an issue with managers deciding who can join the patient group. The also flagged up a lack of information on diagnostics.
Open Door:
The practice is looking for more patient group members.
Battersea Fields:
Graham Harris, long-time chair has stepped down and Su Elliot has moved on to another practice.
St Pauls Cottage:
Practice Manager Claire Taylor reported - “Please can you can explain that we have gone out to patients individually to ask for a representative and no-one is interested in taking up the mantel. We have patient group meetings as part of the PCN, yet at our last one, on the 13th November, I sent out over 30 invitations and not one person attended for St Paul's. If you or your colleagues have any ideas how we can resolve this issue, it would be greatly appreciated.”
St Georges Hospital:
John Hallmark is patient governor and reported….
- a new chair is taking office on 1 April, Sir Mark Lowcock
- planning permission has been sought for new renal unit
- emergency department is coping well with winter pressures
- CQC inspection expected at end of February
Katharine Bugler - Presentation
Katharine Bugler is Deputy Director of Primary Care for Wandsworth & Merton. She and colleague Emma Gillgrass presented 12 slides summarising primary care in the borough, changes predicted in the 10 year NHS Plan, workforce and primary care networks. The slides are attached at foot of report.
She responded to questions about (variously) changes in PPI since end of CCGs; what should be the role of practice patient groups; how she influences and communicates with GP practices; concern about digital communication between secondary and primary care which she promised to look into.
Notes from chair & secretary
Jamie Gillespie (secretary) reported on the development of the forum. Out of 37 GP practices in the borough, we are in touch with 24 which have a patient representative, 12 which are looking for a rep and 1 which is uncontactable. If a practice does not have a patient rep, we invite the practice manager to attend the forum, which is why we have a mixture of patients and managers. Some like this arrangement - some don’t - how do you feel about it? Our aim continues to be to establish a channel of communication between patients and primary care managers, GP Federation and LMC to enrich primary care in Wandsworth.
Sarah Rackham (chair) made the following points:
- she is heartened by the number of practices that are now emailing patients directly about patient groups despite anxiety about GDPR rules
- she acknowledges the demand for clarity in what practice patient groups are for and plans to respond
Next Meeting:
The next meeting will be a joint event hosted by the Patient Forum and the GP Federation on Thursday 6 March 2025. It will take place in the Lancaster Room in St Mary Hall in Putney.
There will be a buffet lunch at 12.00pm and the meeting will be from 1.00pm till 3.00pm.
